Censorship of nude celebrity photos and videos has taken a darkly unexpected turn with the introduction of a new tactic being used by Islamic extremists. Dubbed as “Nudeography”, this type of censorship is caused by militants who upload nude photos and videos to various online content providers in order to “shame” those they deem inappropriate or immoral. The goal is to discourage people from viewing any kind of nude media, regardless of who it is meant for. As shocking as it may seem, this tactic is alarmingly commonplace in some parts of the Middle East and North Africa, where extremist ideologies and strict moral codes still operate.

The unfortunate consequence of Nudeography is that innocent celebrities whose privacy has been violated through the sharing of their intimate images are now being targeted by these extremists for speaking out against their beliefs or simply for appearing in a nude state. From social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to websites hosting nudity-based content, Islamic activists have taken aim at providing daily updates on what they describe as “the dangers” associated with enjoying uninhibited glamour shots or hyped up sex appeal videos associated with many notable figures within the industry.

It goes without saying that there are many problems associated with the violation of privacy in relation to everything from personal emails to sensitive documents; however, when terrorist organizations among other groups target vulnerable individuals connected within the public persona industry, it creates an even bigger issue in terms of safeguarding civil liberties. Operating under such an oppressive veil means that artists whose views have diverged from traditional standards are immediately put on edge when their private materials become part and parcel for others’ entertainment value—or worse yet become tools used to make examples out of them altogether.

Yet another problem that arises due to Nudeography is that more individuals are encouraged to participate in the private delivery network created as a result—whether willingly or not—which could potentially further perpetuate its presence indefinitely until proper preventative protocols can be established in each respective country given that actresses supposedly involved included from countries outside the MENA region (Middle Eastern North African) too.
